My Best Friend Is the One Person Who Knows My Darkest Secret

I never planned to tell anyone.

Not my family. Not my friends. Not even the person closest to me.

Especially not him.

But secrets have a strange way of becoming heavier the longer you carry them.

Mine started with something so small that I barely remember thinking twice about it.

It was just a lie.

A harmless lie, I told myself.

At least, that’s what I believed at the time.

The First Lie

A few months ago, something went missing from our house.

It wasn’t valuable.

But someone was going to get blamed for it.

I knew exactly what had happened.

And instead of telling the truth, I stayed quiet.

Then someone asked me directly.

“Do you know anything about it?”

I said no.

That was the first mistake.

I thought the situation would disappear within a day or two.

It didn’t.

The lie created another question.

That question created another lie.

And before I realized what was happening, I had built an entire story around something that could have been solved by telling the truth in the beginning.

There was only one problem.

My best friend knew I was lying.

He Never Asked

That’s what scared me most.

He didn’t confront me.

He didn’t accuse me.

He simply looked at me one evening and said:

“I know.”

Two words.

That’s all.

I remember sitting there completely frozen.

I asked him what he meant.

He just shook his head.

“You’ll tell me when you’re ready.”

Then he walked away.

I didn’t sleep that night.

Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.

He had known for weeks.

And he had been waiting.

The Secret Got Bigger

After that, everything felt different.

Every conversation made me wonder whether someone else knew.

Every notification on my phone made my stomach drop.

Every time someone mentioned the missing item, I wondered if the truth was finally going to come out.

But the strangest part was my best friend.

He acted completely normal.

He joked with me.

He talked about school.

He sent me random messages.

He never mentioned the secret again.

That somehow made it worse.

The Message

Then, one night, I received a message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence:

“He isn’t the only person who knows.”

I stared at the screen for what felt like an hour.

I checked the number.

I searched through old messages.

Nothing.

I asked my best friend whether he had given my number to anyone.

He said no.

Then he asked me something I’ll never forget.

“Are you sure you know who you’re protecting?”

I didn’t understand what he meant.

Until the next morning.

The Truth

The truth was much bigger than the original lie.

Someone else had known what happened from the beginning.

Someone had deliberately allowed me to take the blame if the truth ever surfaced.

And my best friend had figured it out before I did.

He hadn’t been protecting my secret.

He had been protecting me from the person behind it.

That was the moment everything changed.

I finally told him the entire truth.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just the truth.

He listened quietly.

When I finished, he said:

“You should have told me sooner.”

I expected anger.

Instead, he looked disappointed.

Not because I had lied.

Because I had carried everything alone.

I Still Don’t Know Who Sent the Message

That’s the part that bothers me.

The unknown number disappeared the next day.

No more messages.

No calls.

Nothing.

My best friend says I should forget about it.

Maybe he’s right.

But sometimes, late at night, I still look at my phone and wonder who sent that message.

Because there’s one thing I haven’t told anyone.

Not even my best friend.

The original lie wasn’t the darkest part of the story.

The darkest part is that I still don’t know how much the person behind it knows.

And lately…

I’ve started noticing the same unfamiliar person appearing in places I don’t expect.

Maybe it’s nothing.

Maybe I’m imagining things.

Or maybe the secret I thought I buried…

was never buried at all.
